Solar Energy
Solar energy is an emission free energy source that's created using solar photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight into electricity. Solar panels are often mounted on building roofs and walls, or on frames and poles on the ground. The cost of solar panels has decreased in recent years, making it more accessible and cost competitive with other forms of clean energy. For homeowners, solar energy can help lower your energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated in our communities. There are currently over 1,000 homeowners generating their own renewable energy in PEI who are part of our Net Metering program.
Solar Energy Incentives for Homeowners
Net Metering through Maritime Electric
Net Metering is when you give excess energy created by your renewable energy generator to the power grid through Maritime Electric for a credit. Islanders with wind turbines and solar energy panels, up to 100kW in size, may be eligible for the program. To learn more, visit our Net Metering page.
efficiencyPEI
Through efficiencyPEI, Islanders can receive a rebate of $1,000 per kilowatt installed, up to 40% of the cost of installing solar panels, to a maximum of $10,000. Island businesses and farms can receive $350 per kilowatt installed, up to 40% of the cost of installing solar panels, to a maximum of $10,000. Visit efficiencyPEI’s website for full eligibility requirements.
Canada Greener Homes Grant
The Government of Canada’s Canada Greener Homes Grant can be used towards a variety of energy efficiency projects, including renewable energy generation. Eligible Canadians can apply for a grant, which range between $125-$5,000 depending on the energy efficient retrofit you wish to add to your home.
The Canada Greener Homes Grant can be used in conjunction with the efficiencyPEI grant.
