Maritime Electric Receives Sustainable Electricity Company Designation (Canadian Electricity Association)

Ottawa (April 22, 2021)

Today the Canadian Electricity Association honours Maritime Electric with the prestigious Sustainable Electricity Brand Designation. Maritime Electric becomes the 9th company to receive the designation. Maritime Electric is the primary distributor of electricity in Prince Edward Island, serving approximately 84,000 customers including the City of Charlottetown and all rural communities.

“It is inspiring to see another of our member companies achieve the Sustainable Electricity Designation especially during such an unprecedented year. Since 1918, Maritime Electric has been responsible in providing safe, secure and affordable power, and it is now time to recognize the progress they have made to make their operations more sustainable”, comments Francis Bradley, President and CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association. “Given that more than 80 percent of Canada’s electricity is already non-emitting, utilities that have prioritized sustainability solutions, such as Maritime Electric, are imperative to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.”

“Sustainability is an integral part of our business today and for the future. We have demonstrated our commitment to responsible environmental, social and economic practices and to the principles of sustainable development at Maritime Electric,” commented Jason Roberts, President and CEO of Maritime Electric, “Our entire team is proud of this achievement for our Company, customers and Prince Edward Island.”

The Sustainable Electricity Company™ designation was established by CEA for Canadian utilities from coast-to-coast-to-coast to further advance the integration of sustainability considerations in company decision-making processes. The designation requires utilities to conform to the internationally-recognized ISO 14001 standard on Environmental Management Systems and ISO 26000 Guidance on Social Responsibility. Together, they provide a platform for identifying and addressing key strategic sustainability risks and opportunities related to environmental, social and economic issues. In addition, companies must pass an independent external verification.

Visit CEA’s website for more information about achieving Sustainable Electricity Company™ designation and on CEA’s mandatory Sustainable Electricity program.
